Competition rules & procedures
Make sure you are familiar with our competition rules and procedures — they apply to all teams in all divisions attending our competitions.
Crossovers+
In relation to crossovers, the SCUK Age Grid states the following:
An athlete cannot crossover onto more than 2 cheer teams (a maximum of 3 cheer teams total) and no more than 6 routines in total (inclusive of Cheer, Dance, Stunt Groups & Solos/Individuals) at any one event. EPs may be more restrictive than this — please check with the relevant EP for further guidance.
Athletes may not crossover between different size teams in cheer divisions within the same age and level, regardless of the mandatory split guidelines. E.g. an athlete may compete on only one All Star Elite Cheer Youth 1 team. This does not apply to dance — e.g. an athlete may compete on both small junior pom and large junior pom.
Crossovers are NOT ALLOWED between Novice/Prep and All Star/International cheer teams at the same event. Exception: an athlete may crossover between Novice/Prep divisions to Stunt Group divisions. An athlete may not crossover from Novice to Prep, Novice to All Star or Novice to International; nor from Prep to Novice, Prep to All Star or Prep to International. An athlete MAY crossover from All Star to International.
At Worlds bid events an athlete may compete on ONE TEAM ONLY in Worlds bid divisions/rounds. At non-Worlds bid events an athlete can compete on more than one team in a division that is offered at Worlds (as long as all other crossover guidelines are followed).
Please be sure you are not breaking any of the above. This includes but is not limited to:
- —Having an athlete on the roster of other programs as well as your own, where their total number of performances (including exhibition performances) exceeds 6 routines and/or the maximum of 3 cheer teams permitted.
- —Having an athlete compete on multiple cheer teams (within your own program or across programs) within IASF Worlds bid eligible divisions. This is not limited to the bid round — it applies to the entire event.
- —Listing a false name or DOB to avoid the system flagging an athlete being out of age for a division, or exceeding crossover rules.
- —If it is proven any of these rules have been broken, ALL teams the athlete(s) are competing on will be disqualified from the event — during the weekend or post event. Any bid awarded to The Summit or IASF Worlds will be revoked.
Whilst Future Cheer will always try to allow as much time as possible between routines for athletes who crossover, we only guarantee TEN minutes between performance times. Please keep this in mind when making team placements and deciding on uniform and costume changes.
Routine time limits+
Timing will begin with the first choreographed movement or beat of music, whichever comes first.
- —All Star Elite / University / Masters Cheer — maximum 2 minutes 30 seconds
- —IASF Tiny, Mini, Youth, Junior, Senior and Open — maximum 2 minutes 30 seconds
- —Schools Cheer — maximum 2 minutes 30 seconds
- —IASF / University Non-Tumbling — maximum 2 minutes
- —IASF Global Cheer — 30–40 second cheer portion; 20 seconds maximum to set up; 2 minutes 30 seconds maximum music portion
- —Prep — maximum 2 minutes
- —Novice Cheer — maximum 1 minute 30 seconds
- —Dance (all divisions) — minimum 1 minute 45 seconds, maximum 2 minutes 15 seconds
- —Stunt Groups, Partner Stunts & Individuals/Solos — maximum 1 minute 15 seconds
Routine interruption+
If your routine is interrupted because of failure of the competition equipment you will be permitted to restart your routine from the beginning. If your routine is interrupted because of failure of your own equipment, supplies or personnel, you may either continue or withdraw from the competition.
In the event of injury
The only individuals that may stop a routine for injury are:
- —Competition Officials
- —Coach from the team performing
- —The injured individual
- —Safety / Head Judge
An injured athlete may create a potential safety hazard because of the inability to hold, support, spot or catch. For the safety of all athletes competing, a routine may be interrupted if:
- —An athlete is clearly injured.
- —An athlete is questionably injured and does not resume their role in the routine within 5 seconds.
- —An athlete leaves the competition floor due to an injury.
If a routine is interrupted due to injury, it is at the Competition Officials' discretion whether that team will be allowed to perform again later. An injured athlete may not return to the competition floor unless the competition officials receive clearance from all of the following:
- —Event medical personnel attending to that participant
- —Parent/guardian (if present)
- —Coach of the competing team/programme
In the event of a suspected head injury, the athlete cannot return to perform without clearance from a licensed medical professional trained in head injuries.
Substitutions+
During the competition weekend, a substitution may be made by an athlete or coach already registered with the same program for the event. An athlete cannot be substituted for an athlete/coach from another program, and a substitution cannot be made for a non-registered coach/athlete.
Any substitutions MUST be noted in writing to Event Director Amanda Fairhall. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
Additional athletes may not be added to the team on the day where this would exceed the number of athletes on the team roster without prior notification to the Event Director. Failure to comply will result in a 15 point penalty and may lead to disqualification.
Additional spotters+
Teams may bring their own additional spotters on to the floor. Any additional spotters must wear attire that clearly distinguishes them from the athletes on the team. If an additional spotter touches an athlete during a stunt/skill then a penalty of 1 point may be applied to the team's score.
The role of additional spotters is solely for safety purposes, not for coaching. Excessive coaching by additional spotters (including but not limited to shouting music counts, marking or performing the routine choreography, or shouting encouragement to athletes on the floor) may result in a 1 point penalty.
Uniform requirements+
Future Cheer does not currently enforce the IASF uniform policy, however all uniforms should be appropriate for athletic activity. If you are travelling to compete outside of the UK, please make sure to familiarise yourself with that competition's uniform policy.
False roster information & other penalties+
If a team is found to have provided false information on their roster — including but not limited to falsifying an athlete's date of birth or providing incorrect athlete names — that team will be disqualified from the competition. If false information is discovered after an event, the team will be removed from the rankings for that division and the programme will receive a one year ban from competing at Future Cheer events from the date of that competition. Any Summit or IASF Worlds bid awarded will also be revoked.
Coaches / primary contacts are responsible for making sure all roster information is up to date and correct, and must be able to provide proof of identity/ID for all athletes if asked by FC officials. No exceptions will be made, so it is imperative that roster changes are made prior to the competition and that rosters accurately reflect the athletes on the competition floor and their correct ages.
Other penalties: if it is proven that athletes are competing or have competed out of division, this will result in a minimum penalty of 20 points and may lead to disqualification of the team from the competition.
Unauthorised photography & video+
Future Cheer reserves the right to refuse anyone from taking photographs and videos at any event or competition at any time, to protect the privacy of athletes, spectators, teams and programmes, to stop professional photographers using images for personal gain, and to protect its own employed photographers and photo system.
We are happy for you as a parent or teacher to film and photograph your own children/athletes and teams using phones and amateur camera equipment. Future Cheer prohibits the filming of teams you are not affiliated with or do not have express permission from in advance.
The use of flash photography, continuous flash or any other lighting during competition is prohibited as it produces glare and distracts competitors — this includes camera phone flashes. Anyone using flash photography will be asked to stop and may be asked to leave the competition halls. Flash photography is allowed outside the competition halls and during awards ceremonies at advised photo opportunities.
Use of telephoto/long distance and wide aperture professional camera lenses is forbidden at Future Cheer events unless prior consent has been given, to comply with our child protection and privacy policy. Future Cheer reserves the right to determine if equipment falls under this category based on inspection and to ask users to desist at any time. Forbidden professional lens equipment is defined as:
- —Any lens (including non-telephoto) with a fixed or zoom focal length over 105mm.
- —Any lens (including non-telephoto) with an aperture rating of 2.8 or wider.
- —All professional telephoto lenses regardless of aperture rating.
If you wish to use the above equipment you must apply for a "Photo Pass" and provide a recent (within the last 12 months) enhanced DBS check. Details are available on request and subject to approval by Future Cheer.
Props & solicitation+
The use of confetti cannons, indoor fireworks and other special effect props is prohibited at Future Cheer events. Use of such items will result in penalties assessed against the team at a minimum of 20 points.
Soliciting will not be tolerated from outside businesses. This includes gyms/programmes approaching athletes or parents from another gym to encourage them to move. Failure to comply may lead to team disqualification, penalties assessed against scores and/or removal from the event.
FAQs — on the day of the competition
How do we check in at the competition?+
- —Before you enter warm-up you must sign and check the rosters of each team. If you have any roster changes or athlete swap outs on the day, notify our member of staff at the front desk of warm-up so it can be corrected.
- —When you arrive on the day of competition, all coaches need to check in at warm-up to collect their wristband. This allows access to the arenas to view performances and to enter warm-up.
- —When you check your teams in at warm-up you will be asked to show the unique QR code generated for each event. Any coaches with incomplete profiles will not be able to enter warm-up.
- —You can add coaches to your registration up to 2 weeks before the event so our staff can complete all relevant checks and generate passes. To add a coach after this time, email danielle@futurecheer.net. Coaches added at the event are charged at £45 each, regardless of how many free coach passes are assigned to your registration.
How does warm-up and holding work?+
- —Your warm-up check-in times are in your Ideal-Logic account. You MUST arrive at warm-up at your check-in time — if you miss it you may lose time on the warm-up floor.
- —On arrival a staff member will ask to see your coach wristband and will scan the QR codes of all coaches registered under your programme.
- —Staff will then ask to see and count all athletes and check athlete wristbands for the team entering warm-up.
- —Once in warm-up you will be navigated to each practice mat with an allocated time slot on each (this can vary between events due to space available, but we aim to keep it consistent).
- —After your practice time you will be directed to the warm-up exit where staff will move you to the holding area ready to compete.
- —As soon as the main stage is ready, staff will let you know when to walk onto the competition floor to perform to the panel of judges.
- —While waiting for your team's announcement, holding staff will show you the exit from the main stage for after your routine.
Who can enter the warm-up area?+
The warm-up area is restricted to registered coaches and athletes, and may only be accessed during your allotted time slot. The following cannot enter warm-up at any time:
- —Parents/guardians or family members of athletes and coaches.
- —Team mums/dads or any other chaperones that are not registered coaches. (For Adaptive Abilities, Cheer Abilities & Dance Abilities divisions requiring chaperones, contact bonnie@futurecheer.net.)
- —Athletes that are not competing on the team entering warm-up.
- —Any babies or children of coaches or athletes, even in a pushchair or carrier.
- —People with a media or photography pass — absolutely no photography or filming is allowed in warm-up.
Warm-up staff have a list of which coaches and athletes are permitted into warm-up during each time slot and will check attendance at the entrance.
Staff are allocated to starting and stopping music in warm-up. Supported music types include CDs, lightning port (older iPhones), USB-C (newer Androids and iPhones), or the regular headphone jack. If you uploaded your team's music with your registration you can access it in warm-up, but we recommend bringing a backup.
Where do we submit our music?+
- —Upload your music to the Ideal-Logic registration system for each team entered — no later than the Wednesday prior to the event. This music is downloaded to our sound team and music desk in warm-up so it's ready when you arrive.
- —We still request that a coach or representative is close to the music desk when your team is on the main performance stage in case of issues. Coaches need to give the sound team a clear signal so they can press play.
- —Please bring a few copies of your music to the event as backup.
- —If you have not uploaded your music you must present it to the sound desk by the judging stand at least 1 routine prior to your team's performance. Supported types: CDs, lightning port, USB-C, or headphone jack.
Can the team see their performance after competing?+
Yes — there is a replay TV screen in the arena where athletes can re-watch their routine after competing. There is an approximate 5 minute delay between the broadcast and the performance, so head directly to the replay screen after performing.
Can I review scoring / legalities at events?+
Yes. After your team competes, the primary contact on your registration is notified by email that your scores have been released (approximately 20 minutes after your performance time). Scores are accessed directly through the Ideal-Logic system you registered with.
After reviewing your scoresheet, any questions can be taken to our score check area where our scoring experts will answer them and, if necessary, review your routine video.
If you receive any legality or point deductions during your routine, your primary contact will receive an email notification. You can review the penalties and visit the score check area for further clarification.
When is awards?+
Awards times will be listed on the schedule.
